COLUMBUS, Ohio — In the state’s largest county and metropolitan area, Republicans are attempting to suppress votes by shutting down a public education campaign about early voting. Franklin County GOP officials Doug Preisse and Brad Sinnott have “made voter education a partisan issue,” says Andrew Ginther, the Democratic mayor of Columbus.

Ohio Republican Party Chairman Matt Borges sent out a fundraising email this week titled “Don’t let them steal it.”  In the email, Borges claimed Ohio Democrats are trying to “steal” the still-too-close-to-call race for Ohio Supreme Court between Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court Judge John O’Donnell (D) and Cincinnati appellate Judge Pat Fischer (R).

Here are the facts:

As of today, there are currently “261,000 provisional ballots and late-arriving absentee ballots” outstanding in counties around the state.

Prior to those ballots, Fischer was leading by 24,000 votes. An automatic recount will be triggered if the difference is fewer than 10,600 votes.

In my ongoing effort to ensure no Plunderbund reader makes it through the next nine days without doing something to help a campaign, today we have another great project that could use your help.

On election day, the Brennan Center for Justice at NYU School of Law – the authoritative source of voting rights research in the U.S. – and Common Cause are teaming up on an important research project. They will be conducting an exit poll in several battleground states to look at the effect of restrictive voting laws and other obstacles voters may experience in voting.

Today, the Global Commission on Elections, Democracy and Security released a report titled “Deepening Democracy: A Strategy for Improving the Integrity of Elections Worldwide”. The report is not particularly glowing with regards to the status of American democracy, specifically pointing out recent efforts to suppress African American voting (page 30) and problems with political finance (page 34) – two of the five stated challenges to the integrity of elections.
