I thought I was in Bizarro World yesterday when I turned on the TV and saw John McCain calling for MORE REGULATION of Wall Street in response to the news that Lehman Brothers filed for bankruptcy and Merrill Lynch was getting sold.

It sounds to me like McCain’s call for more regulation goes against one of the basic beliefs of the GOP: free markets solve all problems i.e. less regulation is better.

From this year’s Republican Party Platform:

Government interference in the markets exacerbates problems in the marketplace and causes the free market to take longer to correct […]

We can play that one too…

Eric pointed me to
this piece by Roger Ebert last night. It’s short and to the point and definitely worth reading.

He makes the observation that your average American likes Sarah Palin because she is like them: poorly traveled, lacking an ivy league education, etc. Average Americans like her for the same reason they like the contestants on American Idol: because they think “that could be me up there.”

And his reason for not liking her is the same reason I think a lot of us don’t like her: because WE don’t want to be up there. […]

Labeling the same old Bush-McCain policies as change? Still the same old policies.

Putting lipstick on a pig? Still a pig.

I think the analogy works and the Obama campaign should not be bullied into shying away from it.

Anyone else agree?

John McCain’s NAMBLA Moment

On September 9, 2008 By

Remember Ken Blackwell’s NAMBLA-supports-my-opponent argument?

It looks like McCain is pulling a Blackwell in his new ad: accusing Barack Obama of passing legislation to teach sex ed to kindergartners…

Obviously the accusation is a lie. Obama’s bill included “‘age appropriate’ sex-education for children as a means of teaching them what was proper or inproper touching, as well as to protect them against pedophiles”. Hardly the same thing as handing out flavored condoms with their milk and cookies.

But hey- why let the truth get in the way of political attacks.

The response from the Obama campaign was […]

Sarah Palin Hates Cats

On September 9, 2008 By

Sarah Palin’s best friends reveal they may not vote for her and, oh yeah, she hates cats.

(She also hates polar bears, moose, wolves, etc.).

So the McCain/Palin camp announced that Sarah Palin will FINALLY sit for an interview on Thursday.

I would like to suggest a few choice questions she should be asked…

Ms. Palin…

Modern screening processes for genetic disorders like down sydrome are safe and effective and available to most women who are at risk.

Because abortion is currently legal and safe, 90% of pregnant women who receive a down syndrome diagnosis choose to have an abortion.

This has led to a large drop in the number of children born with down syndrome are each year- down to around 5,500.

Once you […]

More Racist Anti-Obama Graffiti

On September 9, 2008 By

I saw this obnoxious little piece of graffiti written on the wall in a truck stop bathroom near Toledo: “Don’t waste your vote on a nigger”

It’s been altered a few times- including the addition of the word dead before the word nigger- which certainly does sound like a threat to me.

I’m not sure this is something the Secret Service would investigate. Or something they even should investigate. It’s not like racists living in NW Ohio is some kind of breaking news.

I wonder if the women’s room has anti-Palin graffiti yet.

Did you know Sarah Palin has a 19 year old son named Track who is being deployed to Iraq on September 11th, 2008?

Of course you did- because it’s all she ever talks about.

And did you ever think: jeez, that’s weird. Why would she announce specific details of his deployment to the world? Does she think they don’t have TV and newspapers in the Middle East? Doesn’t she remember what happened with Prince Harry?

I could go off on a rant here about how she cares more about her political career than the safety and wellbeing of her own […]

Sure the pastor at Barack Obama’s church may have said some stupid stuff about white people or whatever but, at the end of the day, his intentions were righteous and his message was intended to bring about positive change for his congregation and for society as a whole.

Sure Reverend Wright may have said some stupid stuff, but he never had any intention of taking over the country, installing a Christian government and forcing his beliefs on every citizen.

The same can not be said for Sarah Palin’s pastor.

For over 25 years Palin and her family attended church […]

Sarah Palin’s Debating Skills

On September 8, 2008 By

CSPAN is replaying the 2006 Alaska Gubernatorial Debate. It turns out Palin actually does really well. I hope everyone watches at least a part of this and the press starts raising their expectations for her in the upcoming VP debate.

The other thing I got from watching this video: people in Alaska DO NOT talk like they are from Fargo, donchaknow. Just Sarah Palin.

So where the hell did she get her accent?

Accentgate anyone?

UPDATE: about an hour in she says NEW-CUE-LER energy.
