I am happy to report some good news in the dark and deadly atmosphere of fading democracy: President
Trump has finally come up with a job for Vice President Pence beyond tail-wagging and Bible reading.
By now you’ve probably heard the reports that Pence, a Fido-like creature with heavenly ambitions, is promoting a space force that would validate Orson Welles’ alarming vision of Martians landing in New Jersey 80 years ago. (In modern terms it would be cast as Trump landing in the Oval Office for a second term.)
“The time has come,” Pence soared to a Pentagon audience, ” to write the next […]Full Story... →
Oh, for Heaven’s sake!
With the juicy Manafort trial winding down, another long-fingered scandal was whipping up in western New York. Its district congressman, Rep. Chris Collins, the first of his Capitol Hill breed to endorse Donald Trump, was arrested on a charge of insider trading. I’m not that deeply into understanding Wall Street transactions, but the reports seem serious.
In brief, Collins, a rich Republican operative, sits on the board of an Australian drug company that was trying to develop a miracle drug for multiple sclerosis. When Collins was tipped off that the product was a failure without public notice, he hastily called […]Full Story... →
The white flash mob that turned out for Herr Trumpf’s rally in Tampa with vulgarities and fist-waving threats to the media was in brutal contrast to a friendlier moment the day before as superstar LeBron James hosted the opening of his Foundation’s grade school in Akron.
In Florida the cheers went out for a president, having now downed his quart of Muscle Milk and executed his defiant game face with tight lip-synced push- button grins, rose in the grandeur of his chilling opera.
In James’ hometown of Akron, where he entered the real world without the benefit of a $1 […]Full Story... →
“The Democrats lost an election which, frankly, they should have been able to win, because the Electoral College is much more advantageous for Democrats, as you know, than it is to Republicans.” – Donald Trump at Helsinki News Conference
No, the sane people in this country did not know that.
Move over, Burger King. You’re no longer the exclusive Home of the Whopper.
Since January 2017, the structure which variously was entitled the President’s Mansion, President’s House, and Executive Mansion now claim that title. For the White House, what used to be called black lies are now part […]Full Story... →
This column is premised on a truth I’ve discovered over nearly forty years of practicing law and working in politics. Conservatives are weak. They lack the self-discipline to grasp what conservatism actually means and if they actually understood the doctrine, they wouldn’t believe in it. Donald Trump has destroyed what little that remained of conservatism. Liberals are now responsible for the future of the United States.
July 16, 2018, brought America to a turning point. No American will ever again be able to honestly defend Donald Trump. Trump publicly took sides against the United States by believing that Vladimir Putin […]Full Story... →
… I will begin by saying what everybody would like to ignore or forget but which must nevertheless be stated, namely, that we have sustained a total and unmitigated defeat…
A total and unmitigated defeat. Note to Donald Trump: that means not winning.
These words were not spoken by talking heads in the aftermath of the debacle in Helsinki on July 16. But they should have. In fact, they were uttered 80 years ago in the House of Commons by Winston Churchill.
The appalling spectacle of Donald Trump and his lapdog performance in the Finnish capital as […]Full Story... →
When it comes to expressions of patriotism in perilous times, silence is not golden. Among Republicans, John McCain clearly knows that.
The sounds of silence coming from congressional Republicans in the wake of the indictments of twelve more Russian intelligence officers that have been forensically linked to the 2016 election debacle have been deafening. That’s why John McCain’s statement on the matter has become a singular sensation, for there is no one else in his party that is so demonstrative in putting country, rather than party, first in mind.
It is becoming increasingly clear that the Republican Party has […]Full Story... →
As the world watched the heroic efforts to rescue the young soccer team trapped in a Thai cave, one thing was stuck on our brains. We could only think of the President’s indifference to the plight of thousands of migrant kids who are unspeakably lost or detained by the president’s monstrous “zero tolerance” policy. He assured us that he had solved the problem with the sleight of his pen days ago but as with most of his empty self-serving pronouncements that wasn’t true.
The theater of the absurd has continued to the point of having a one-year-old child appear before […]Full Story... →
The priest’s greeting to the newly-married couple and the congregation gathered to support them in the United States Naval Academy chapel was warm and moving. May all of you experience and share the peace within you, the chaplain said to all.
You can certainly expect peace and love at a wedding when two families come together to celebrate the union of their children as they prepare their lives together. But there was also an added element in visiting the beautiful and charming city of Annapolis last weekend, the scene of a mass shooting just before the wedding of a family […]Full Story... →
In this political atmosphere, I have tried to remain optimistic. Have things been dreadful? Yes. Have I sometimes lost hope? Of course. Yet I have tried to remind myself that we only have to endure a Trump presidency for 926 more days. I have encouraged those around me to volunteer on campaigns and help Democrats take the House back in the fall (fingers crossed!). While citizen activism is useful, my true beacon of hope during this time has been the Supreme Court, telling myself that of course, they must see Trump’s actions as unconstitutional.
This obviously has changed within the […]Full Story... →
Is it possible that the Vice Chair of the Senate Intelligence Committee, a guy who enjoys raising a glass or two of the vintage, might be in collusion with a popular language website for the purpose of giving us a heads-up about some major events to come?
Probably not, but it would make a good story if it were true.
The only major collusion going on these days seems to be with the ever-bloviating Sean Hannity of Fox News, along with that other intelligence committee headed by Representative Devin Nunes, the stalwart Trump defender who is otherwise incapable […]Full Story... →
