John Kasich Signs 20-Week Abortion Ban
Ohio Governor John Kasich signed a 20-week abortion ban into law in Ohio earlier today. NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio released the following response:
John Kasich Vetoes six-week “Heartbeat Bill” abortion ban and signs 20-week abortion ban
Governor John Kasich has signed a 20-week abortion ban into law. Senate Bill 127 has no exceptions for rape or incest. The bill’s life of the woman exception is too narrow to apply, only allowing a procedure once a woman is on the brink of death or permanent organ damage. At the same time, Kasich vetoed the equally dangerous six-week abortion ban commonly known as the “Heartbeat Bill.”
NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio Executive Director Kellie Copeland said, “John Kasich is treating women’s health care like a game. He thinks that by vetoing one abortion ban Ohioans will not notice that he has signed another. The 20-week abortion ban callously disregards the unique circumstances that surround a woman’s pregnancy. Once a woman has made the decision to end a pregnancy, she needs access to safe and legal abortion care in her community. Kasich’s actions today will fall hardest on low-income women, women of color, and young women. History will not judge Gov. Kasich’s disregard for women’s health kindly.”
