I had no intention to write about Ohio Gov. John Kasich’s announcement for the U.S. Presidency today, but, of course, Donald Trump would not allow that.
I was letting the national outlets fill my newsfeed with Kasich announcement reacts, and enjoying the show immensely, when the perfect cherry-on-top came along: Donald Trump had done something stupid and garish, again, and totally stole Kasich’s thunder.
He shared Republican nomination opponent Lindsey Graham’s cell phone number with hundreds of attendees and national television cameras today at a rally in South Carolina, the state which Graham represents in the U.S. Senate.
Plan as John Kasich might, shooting for one day of glory, along comes The Donald to splash away his moment. This New Yorker cover says everything.
Trump is now up with a 4.2 point average lead in the GOP nomination polls, according to RealClearPolitics, while Kasich has dropped to 1.5 percent. In the latest ABC/Washington Post poll, Trump came in with 24 percent, the first candidate to hit in the 20s other than Jeb!
And here stands John Kasich, watching the news cycle fly past him, for the Freak Show that is the candidacy of Donald Trump. I may be one of the Freak Show’s biggest fans, as it lays bare the heart of the Republican Party since 2009.
I have not been surprised in the least to see Trump rising like high tide in the polls. He’s brash, malicious, ignorant, and unapologetic about it. In short, he is a perfect representative of the extreme right-wing, and it’s no surprise so many GOP primary voters recognize him as one of their own.
Meanwhile, he’s giving the GOP establishment fits, and today, hilariously, it was John Kasich’s turn. Onward and upward.
