We should all be thankful that we live in an age in which such expert economists as Mitch McConnell can lead the nation into a new era of economic prosperity for all.

We once thought that such recognition should go to Mitt Romney, who told us as a presidential candidate that although the economy was getting better, President Obama made it worse.

But the owlish new senate majority leader has out-reasoned Mitt with his profound explanation of economic progress – and you can thank the Republicans on Capitol Hill for that.

Ohio has spent more than a decade growing charter schools by essentially robbing public schools of their funding base while not holding the often poorly performing charters to the same rigorous education standards as public schools.  And a new, energized gallery of State Board of Education members drew lines in the sand Friday, setting up flash points between them and board members who owe their allegiance to Gov. John Kasich, a big supporter of the charter school movement.

Republicans are full of piss and vinegar from the shellacking they dished out to Democrats last November. They did very well nationally, reclaiming the majority in the U.S. Senate and upping their seat totals in the U.S. House of Representatives to 247, 29 more than the 218 votes needed to pass a bill. What happened in Washington was also echoed in statehouses across the nation, including Ohio, where the GOP now enjoys the largest number of House seats—65 out of 99—since 1966, when Ohio started electing House members by single-member districts.
