Sure hope he didn’t think I’d forget.
Roughly 3 years ago I got into it with some of our friends on the right. They were using an article by Steve Kraske at the Kansas City Star that took serious liberties with a quote from POTUS in order to make it look as though he was hinting at not running for a second term:
“You know, if – if I feel like I’ve made the very best decisions for the American people and three years from now I look at it and, you know, my poll numbers are in the tank and because we’ve gone through these wrenching changes, you know, politically, I’m in a tough spot, I’ll – I’ll feel all right about myself,” Obama told CNN’s Ed Henry.
“I said to myself very early on, even when I started running for office, I don’t want to be making decisions based on getting re-elected, because I think the challenges that America faces right now are so significant,” the president also said.
“Obviously, if I make those decisions and I think that I’m moving the country on the right direction economically, in terms of our security interests, our foreign policy, I’d like to think that those policies are continued because they’re not going to bear fruit just in four years.”
He wasn’t. It was pretty obvious, despite the wailing from the WND crowd, that Obama wasn’t dropping big hints on not running for re-election.
As I’ve been known to do, I made a friendly wager to get them to put up or shut up. In his defense, Bizzyblog commenter Joe C. took me up on it and put his money where his mouth is:
OK… If Obama is NOT on the top of the ticket after the Dem Nat’l Convention in 2012 for any reason other than death, you give a hundo to my charity of choice; if he is, I give a C-note to yours. If he dies in office, it’s a push. Deal?
I’m going to go ahead and give PB commenter sailtravis the benefit of the doubt and not hold him to anything even though he apparently wanted in.
Even though reports arose a few months later that Obama was quietly lining up his re-election campaign, Joe was still quite confident in his political Nostradamian prognostications:
Don’t worry. I remember; and on the rare occasion that I’m wrong, I always pay off. Hopefully you will.
Actually, I’m feeling more confident than ever! Remember, the bet is not just run for re-election, but: “If Obama is NOT on the top of the ticket after the Dem Nat’l Convention in 2012 for any reason other than death…” Go back and look it up. So if he runs, and loses in a primary fight to Hillary, but accepts the VP slot, you lose. (I can’t believe I got through that without vomiting on my keyboard.) Really, I’m wondering now if he’ll even finish out this term.
So here’s the deal Joe. I’m not going to argue ACORN and I’ll give you a pass on having to hold your nose and enter credit card details there. I’m letting you off the hook and my charity of choice for this little wager is NARAL Pro-choice Ohio – in honor of the GOP War on Women. To make good on the bet just visit the following page and check Bronze membership and gift it in honor of “Eric at Plunderbund”. Email me the receipt for the transaction and we’ll call it even [eric AT plunderbund DOT COM].
Psst: Now might be a good time for others to click the link above and in honor of Joe C. and my triumph in this wager become a member of NARAL Ohio!
Barack Obama is the nominee of the Democratic Party for President of the United States of America and NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio is $100 richer.
That’s a pretty good night.
