Head on over to teapartypatriots.org and the first thing you’ll see is this image quoting Thomas Jefferson:

“The democracy will cease to exist when you take away from those who are willing to work and give to those who would not.”

Wow! That quote seems to perfectly match up with the Tea Party’s “I ain’t payin’ for no lazy welfare queen” mentality. AND it’s from one of our country’s founding fathers.

Sure Jefferson was rich slave owner, but he is also considered one the greatest U.S. presidents. He purchased the Louisiana Territory, sent Lewis and Clark out to explore the west, and authored the Declaration of Independence as well as many other important documents and letters. So it’s not surprising the Tea Party wants to associate themselves with Jefferson.

Jefferson was an amazingly prolific writer and speaker, one of the most quotable in US history.

But the quote the Tea Party is attributing to him, according to Monticell.org and every other source I could find, “has not been found in any of the writings of Thomas Jefferson”.

Come on, guys. We already know you can’t get anything else right – at least spend 2 minutes researching your quotes on Google.
