Just got word the John Kasich bailed on a scheduled interview with National Public Radio “Talk of the Nation” ten minutes before it was scheduled to air, leaving the interview solely with Strickland.  Kasich pullout supposedly because he refused to agree to take questions from listeners.

Before you think this might be some Juan Williams-inspired boycott, Kasich also refused any reporter’s questions at the ORP’s coordinated campaign bus tour kickoff event this morning, too.

Will update as more information comes in.Bruce Banner Kasich

[UPDATE:] CNN is reporting that John Kasich has flown off the deep end today in his political rhetoric in a speech that accused Democrats of everything under the sun, including physically keeping people from voting:

"In my entire political life I have never seen the kind of negative, smearing, lying stuff that these Democrats have done and brought on the people of this state," he told a crowd of Republicans in this Columbus suburb. "Shame on them! Do they have one good positive decent idea in their brain? I don’t think so."

For all his bombast about President Obama, Kasich made no mention of Strickland. He instead issued ominous warnings about how the Democratic Party may try to steal the election next Tuesday.

"They will try to buy this election from top to bottom," he said. "They are going to use the policies of fear, every left-wing organizer in this country, to come in here and scare our people and try to drag people away from the polls. They don’t want you to vote. They are going to tell a lot of lies."

Here’s the video from National Review:

In contrast, Portman was reportedly cool as a cucumber.

  • “backwards into the 90’s is a helluva lot better than what he has given us since he’s been president” Of course, in the 90’s we also had more live young men walking around instead of oil war casualties. So I guess it was better that way.

What’s striking about Kasich’s comment is that he is describing EXACTLY what he and the GOP are doing — laying out their entire game plan and trying to throw it on the Democrats. I just got off the phone with a friend who said she’s so sick of Kasich’s negative, lying smear ads she can’t watch TV. She said, “Doesn’t the guy have ANYTHING positive to offer?” (Uh — no.) I can’t think of a single remotely valid case of Democrats trying to “steal” an election — he should be nailed on the physical intimidation thing and required to cite a single instance of it or evidence that it has or might happen — but we certainly saw Republicans do that here in 2004. And as for fear and trying to buy an election, the entire GOP charge this year is based on those two things and little else. Scare voters? All I have to do is play some John Kasich videos for them. He himself is enough to scare voters, probably why he refused to go on NPR or talk to reporters. This guy is truly scary, and if he becomes governor, this state is in a world of hurt. What a despicable, lying, smearing, fear-mongering person he is.

Sounds like his internals are showing Ted surging. Always heard about his infamous temper when things start to unravel. Modern, is there any other explanation for JK’s bizarre behavior please share…Jim, columbus

Nope. It’s pretty remarkable. Kasich is imploding before your very eyes. Look how he saulks off stage. You can see it in their body language.

  • 4:28: “…and then the Republicans actually did something they don’t often do…they kept their word”

  • Notice the sirens at the end? Did the Kasich campaign call 911 on his flailing campaign? 😉
