I got an email in my inbox this morning from the Buckeye Firearms Association with the rather blunt subject “Obama reveals anti-gun U.N. intent”. Why the alarmism? Because Obama announced his intent to appoint Greg Nickels as an alternate representative to the United Nations.
Why is that a problem? Apparently because Nickels was a member of Mayors Against Illegal Guns. (The largest firearms retailer in the nation, Wal-Mart, has voluntarily undertaken some of the suggestions of MAIG to try and “help ensure that guns do not fall into the wrong hands”, and many of the MAIG recommendations are supported by gun owners, both NRA members and not.) This despite the fact that Nickels is most well known (by a large margin) for his environmental efforts, not gun control.
And this is ignoring the fact that Nickels was appointed as an alternate. The actual appointees? Carol Fulp (that sly socialist Obama, appointing a Senior Vice President from John Hancock Financial!), Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.), and Sen. Roger Wicker (R-Miss).
This is one of the things that annoy me to no end about modern political discourse in America. I understand why lobby groups like BFA (and the NRA) do it – it works, and keeps them relevant with their donor bases – but that doesn’t make it any less duplicitous and sucky to spin these crazy conspiracy theories.
