First the original, by Soundgarden:

Now the cover by Johnny Cash:

Verdict? Cash in a 2nd round knockout. The original is fantastic and defines Soundgarden in a large way. They were a great live band and Cornell is one of the best rock vocalists ever. Cash, however, does the near impossible and makes the song not only his own, but redefines it completely – and pulls it off to perfection.

  • I'm a big fan of Soundgarden, but Chris Cornell can't sing for shit.

  • LOL. That's the craziest shit I've ever heard.

Maybe it's a generational thing but I never liked most of the grungers, especially those grinding dirgers like soundgarden. I think I held a grudge against grunge because they shoved aside some great power-pop bands like “material issue,” “the posies,” and “teenage fanclub.” If you want to hear some great music from the early-90s, check out those bands. Here's a case where pandora comes in handy. πŸ™‚

  • Good god man. Material Issue? LOL. Different strokes I guess, but LOL. “Power Pop”. πŸ˜‰

  • Oh and btw. How did you guys score the fight? πŸ˜‰

  • Let me clarify. I watched an unknown Soundgarden open for Skid Row and completely kick Sebastian Bach's ass. Bach opened his set with “holy shit, those guys are good…”

    I left at halftime.

  • mvirenicus

Good gawd, man. You need to ask? Cash could even make the worst seattle band sound decent and he proves it right there. LOL

  • It is important to submit your scorecard! LOL. A Tyson like KO in :43. Noted.

  • mvirenicus

To be perfectly fair I must submit that I love the city of seattle and note that at least they *have* a music scene. LOL

  • mvirenicus

Oh c'mon! You can't listen to “valerie loves me” or “very first lie” and tell me you haven't been there in all your youthful angsty glory!

  • FYI: Columbus has a great music scene, as every great college town should.

  • Valerie Loves Me? HAHA…

I do believe I saw Material Issue play somewhere in Cleveland back in the day. They're no Ned's Atomic Dustbin, but hey – who is?

  • mvirenicus

Loved NAD. Material Issue's “International Pop Overthrow” had a dozen songs that could have topped the alternative charts if they weren't being clogged by nirvana at the time. And yes, that includes valerie. πŸ™‚

  • mvirenicus

Ok, let me know when columbus produces a prince, husker du, replacements, soul asylum or semisonic like minneapolis, or a nirvana, pearl jam or soundgarden like seattle. πŸ˜›

i saw duran duran at the old cleveland agora in 1982 before anyone in the usa had heard of them. there were maybe 200 people at the show. they kicked ass too! ;-P
