I was not the biggest Cash fan growing up. I bristled at anything remotely “country”. Dad was a big fan so I got a solid foundation on the basics. It wasn’t until his later years and his crossover to the rock side of the world that I gained more respect and began to pay more attention to him. I got to meet him once in the Nashville airport. Super nice and down to earth type. Smaller in stature than you’d think.

His cover of Soundgarden’s Rusty Cage solidified me as a fan. Bloody brilliant. One of the best re-tellings of a song of all time. Will try to feature that in a revived version of Friday Night Music Fights (and I think Cash will win).

Friend recently sent me a copy of American VI and though a somber album, it is true genius. Pure Cash.

i heard this song on the radio for the first time maybe 20 years ago, and i adopted his reasons as my own for my choice of wardrobe color which remains in effect to this day. 🙂

  • Shalom Eric,

I had much the same experience a few years ago after listening to Johnny Cash's America III. On America IV his cover of Trent Reznor's Hurt convinced me that my dad had been right all along.

  • I usually have an allergic reaction to country, but Cash? Genius.

  • Shalom Brian,

As science fiction writer Theodore Sturgeon told us:

Sure, 90 percent of science fiction is crud. That's because 90 percent of everything is crud.

That includes Country music of course. Artists like The Highwaymen go a long way to filling the 10 percent.

  • Dude transcended any music categorization labels. Pure genius.

  • Hurt is good as well but Rusty Cage was the one that grabbed me. Probably because Soundgarden was a big influence in the early 90s.

I love that man and I'm not embarrassed to admit it. He was brilliant and timeless.
