President Obama, in his weekly address, comments on the recent 5-4 Supreme Court decision that we’ve been discussing here at PG:

So let me get this straight. You can ship jobs overseas. Set up a foreign corporation. Then use said foreign corporation to affect U.S. elections. There should be teabaggers in the streets over this one, but don’t hold your breath. Their trumped up corporatist astroturf rallies don’t really give fuck all for Democracy.

  • Oh – I have no idea if that’s the case – just had been reading in other places that GOP was targeting her – here’s a HuffPo link to AOL’s Politics Daily from yesterday on it:

  • Shalom Eric,

Precedent is important, a century of precedent may be even more so, but it is not, must not, be definitive.

  • My favorite “carrying it through to its logical consequences scenario” so far – from the NY Times today:

    To the Editor:

Why is everyone up in arms about the recent Supreme Court decision allowing corporations unfettered monetary access to the American election process? To me this is a golden opportunity, as now our elected officials can sell corporate naming rights to their seats.

The junior senator from North Carolina? He or she is now the Bank of America senator. The senior senator from Alaska could be the Exxon senator.

The politicians may never have to fund-raise again! Think of all the time that will save to actually legislate.

  • Shalom Jill,

At The Writing On The Wal we've been referring to Senator Blanche Lincoln as (D-Walmart) for a while now.

    Yes, Blanche is a Democrat.

  • Hadn't seen that but I have seen that she's seriously targeted and predicted as a real possible loss of the remaining 59 Sen. Dems.

  • Shalom Jill,

Why in the world would Walmart abandon a perfectly good senator that it has already bought and paid for?

    B'shalom,

The SCOTUS decision will rally many dejected progressives, including myself. It's essential we have a Dem in the White House the next 7 years to nominate future vacancies. As much as I'm disappointed with the Democrats' performance we have to remember that the SCOTUS has more power in the long run. Incredibly, the Supremes are unelected and serve life-time terms.

The Supremes decided that presidents can start wars w/o Congressional war declarations, that corporations have personhood, that money equals speech, Habeus Corpus and other civil liberties and human rights issues.

mverinicus and other disallusioned progressives, vote your conscience and I understand the disgust with the Dems but keep in mind that it's essential that the balance of the Court be changed.

I never thought I'd see the day but I'm actually taking my woman's lead on this stuff. I've always been the political brains of my household but I'm letting go b4 I completely lose my marbles. I was able to dissuade her from protesting at obama's lorain county appearance but I think she's right about giving up on the dems and have grown to admire her quiet resolve. And she was the one who turned me onto obama in the primaries. Oy. Dems got probs.

  • Shalom Seditious,

That the last constitutionally declared war the United States entered was WW II bothers me a lot.

Considering that President Franklin Roosevelt had a constitutional declaration of war within 24 hours of the attack on Pearl Harbor indicates that reaction time is not the issue. I chalk it up to the general cowardice of Congress.

In my book the President should only be able to commit combat troops for a maximum of 168 hours from boots on the ground before either getting a formal declaration or getting all those boots the hell out of the war zone.

  • Shalom Jill,

Someday the interwebs will also transmit sarcasm. 🙂

Good ideas Jeff about putting the brakes to unconstitutional wars of choice. Enforcement of the Sherman Anti-Trust Act is another reason we need future Supremes nominated by Dem presidents. “Too big to fail” needs to go out the window.

I don't think the Sherman Act has been used since President Ford and Carter broke up AT&T. I'm not sure if that has more to do with the Executive or Judicial Branches.
