First some numbers:

At least 96% of the people in Haiti are Christian. 80% are Catholic. 16% Protestant.

Per capita, that’s way more than the US which comes it at less than 77% Christian. It’s also slightly more than Haiti?s neighbor the Dominican Republic, which is only 95.2% Christian (88.6% Roman Catholic and 4.2% Protestant).

Then some nuttery:

Pat Robertson blames the earthquake in Haiti on the Haitians – specifically their lack of faith. According to Pat, a religious failing on the part of the Haitians didn?t just cause this earthquake but also the numerous other disasters that have befallen the nation over the years. It all started when the Haitians, as slaves, revolted hundreds of years ago and formed their own nation. And in order to win their freedom they had to sign a “pact to the devil”.

There is definitely some strange racist crap going on in Robertson’s head here, but that’s a topic for another post. My point is that Haiti is almost exclusively populated by God-fearing Christian folk. Even more, per capita, than the US and the Dominican Republic. And yet good old reliably crazy Pat says:

The Dominican Republic “is prosperous, healthy, full of resorts, etc. Haiti is in desperate poverty. Same island. They need to have — and we need to pray for them — a great turning to God and out of this tragedy.

Again, Haiti is already 96% Christian and The Dominican Republic has FEWER Christians than Haiti. How much more ?turned toward God? can they possibly be?

It’s unlikely that you needed any more proof, but just in case you did, you can finally close the book: Pat Robertson is officially full of shit.

There aren?t that many people in the world who I think deserve to immediately move on to the next phase of their eternal destiny ? but Pat Robertson certainly is one of them.

that is so cool. i haven't been doing much gaming lately because i simply don't have the time, but i played the hell out of the PC version of Assassin?s Creed about a year ago. great game. i can't afford to buy Assassin?s Creed 2.

everybody should just shut the feck up. i'm having visions of hideous bald primates shrieking at each other and throwing poo.

  • I might have been drooling. Certainly possible. Can't tell you for sure. It was over three months ago. And who the hell remembers what they were doing with their saliva three months ago? Certainly not me.

Putting aside my potentially overzealous spit secretion, I hardly think this post was anti-Christian.

As a matter of fact, I think I was actually defending the chosen faith of the people of Haiti.

If it was anything, this post was PRO-Christian.

Either way, Robertson is a nut.

  • Shalom Raguel,

As a journalist who thinks the Constitution does guarantee my right to yell fire in a crowded theater, you'll be hard pressed to find a more rabid advocate of the First Amendment.

The solution to hateful speech is never censorship but rather a vigorous refutation through even more free speech.

Sunday morning on Bob Edward's Weekend I listened to Arthur Garfield Hays' This I Believe essay in which he wrote, in part:

Thought must be free. Men cannot think unless they express themselves. Is this an absolute? Yes, just as the right to think is an absolute. Are there no exceptions? None whatever. Has not society the right to protect itself against noxious ideas? No. Oliver Wendell Holmes once said, ?Noxious ideas are like champagne; expose them to the air and they fall flat.? Who can be certain of what is the truth unless all views are heard?

Robertson is a self-important ass who preys on the weak of will and mind to line his personal coffers. Every word out of his mouth is self serving and never to be trusted.

Having said that, I would never deny him his Constitutional right to spout his hate, but no one should express surprise when Joseph, Eric and myself, chose to counter his schemes with the bright light of our own words.

    B'shalom,

    Jeff

Well, if the earth quake was punishment for voodoo, what does Pat R. think is the reason for the volcanic ash cloud that is hanging over Europe? My friend in the UK thinks it is a punishment for too many gingers. He feels all the gingers will become extinct due to this cloud, much like what happened to the dinosaurs a few years back. He himself being a ginger, and gay at that, is, understandably, rather worried.

  • Shalom Mary Jo,

    Huzzah!
