A Kinder, Gentler RNC?
Michael Steele was elected RNC chairman this afternoon. Ken Blackwell went out in the first round.
I really was rooting for Blackwell – hoping his homophobic conservative extremism would drive the Republican party further to the right and further away from the average American voter.
Instead they chose Michael Steele (considered the most moderate of the five candidates) who promised to “expand the reach of the party by competing for every group, everywhere”.
Sure, it’s possible Michael Steele’s win might actually have a similar effect by driving away the hard line social conservatives like Blackwell.
But it seems more likely that Steele’s leadership will result in the GOP fielding more moderate candidates who also claim to like puppies (see video below) – and I have to admit, that worries me a little …
