New McCain ad out attacking ACORN follows the “risky” scheme, but also adds the former line of attack that says Barack is an uppity negro. You know the one. His rise has been too fast. Who does he think he is? How can he possibly be winning this election over John Sidney McCain p.o.w.?
Scary, right? Here’s where they’re going with this. It’s racial dog whistling at it’s finest. ACORN is an organization that works mostly in poor neighborhoods. 60-70% of the 1.3 million people they’ve registered to vote are black. Do I need to continue?
They do this shit every election cycle. Supposed American democracy loving Republicans attack an organization that is committed to getting more people involved in this process. The reason they do this is because their electoral success is tied to these types of people NOT participating in the electoral process. These are the people their policies continue to hurt. Their rising up is serious bad news for the GOP. Any organization seeking to empower this rising up is an official GOP enemy.
So that’s what’s going on here. This ad lays it out fully. Barack is an uppity negro whose rise has been too fast. He has ties to other uppity negroes who want to vote against us. Be afraid. Be very afraid.
What are the facts? Kos diarist TocqueDeville has a great piece breaking it down. The most important of the takeaways is this:
ACORN can’t not turn in bogus applications. They are legal documents, no matter who brings them in, and they are required by law to turn them in no matter what.
Ambinder echoes this:
Voter registration cards aren’t the property of ACORN or any other group, and ACORN is required by law to turn in every completed form — even if they’re obviously fraudulent. ACORN insists it has procedures in place to flag these forms, but you can’t blame supervisors of elections from throwing up their hands when they come in.
You get that? ACORN is required by law to turn in every completed forms and they flag ones they review and think are bogus.
The other key thing to remember is there has never been one single documented incident of someone voting illegally as a result of a fraudulent voter registration. From an ACORN memo:
Fact: Voter fraud by individuals is extremely rare, and incredibly difficult. There has never been a single proven case of anyone, anywhere, casting an illegal vote as a result of a phony voter registration. Even if someone wanted to influence the election this way, it would not work.
So this boils down to GOP scare tactics and intimidation all meant to disrupt the process and at least cast doubt on any Obama victory. Like I said before, the tin foil hats have changed heads.
The more sinister underlying message here is a racist one. Instead of organizing registration efforts of their own, they attack ACORN’s. It’s no wonder this tactic is being taken. They can’t possibly get more Rs to register. They are a shrinking lot. What the above ad, and these attacks on ACORN are really saying is “don’t let those uppity negroes vote and for sure don’t vote for that uppity negro Barack Obama”.
Again I repeat. There has never been a single proven case of anyone, anywhere, casting an illegal vote as a result of a phony voter registration. NOT ONE!
Jeff Coryell also has an excellent post on this subject related more to Ohio and other GOP suppression techniques going on.
