House Republicans are to continue their insurgent legislative sit-in today to protest the Democratic leadership going on recess without having voted on the “American Energy Act”, otherwise known as the “Jed Clampett Offshore Drilling Project”.

Energy policy aside (and the fact that this is a pure political stunt), this is pretty brilliant of the GOP. I watched this unfold on Friday completely on Twitter. It was the best political use I’ve seen yet of the Twitter. The three main Tweeters to follow were petehoekstra, johnculberson, and johnboehner. Like any politician or executive, it is hard to tell if it is them or staff (most likely staff in all cases). It was fun watching this and people on Twitter commenting on it. Chris Baker and I had a bit of back and forth along with Renee in Ohio.

Now here’s the funny thing. GOP minority leader Boehner is so dedicated to the cause that he puts out a press release:

“In an urgent memo sent to GOP Members and staff Saturday (“A Call to Action on American Energy”), Republican Leader John Boehner (R-) and Whip Roy Blunt (R-Mo.) hailed Friday’s action, and encouraged House Republicans to return to the Capitol beginning Monday morning to help keep the historic effort going,” said a press release just released by Minority Leader Boehner’s office.

but…Boehner will skip out:

Update – Neither Boehner nor Blunt are expected to be in attendance at Monday’s talkfest, and its unclear if they will show up at any point during the week, according to GOP leadership aides.

Way to lead the way Johnnie Boner!
