Jill has a post up discussing a report from the President’s Council on Bioethics that basically warns about the dangers of biomedical innovation.

In short, the group argues that biomedical innovations are an affront to “human dignity” and should no be pursued.

Innovations like drugs that enhance cognition, genetic manipulation therapies that could extend life, and “therapeutic cloning” that could furnish replacements for diseased tissue and organs.

This is, unfortunately, exactly the kind of report we should expect from this group given the people George Bush appointed to the council.

On April 24, 1925 a Grand Jury indicted John T. Scopes for violating a law (The Butler Act) passed one month earlier by the Tennessee Legislature that made it illegal to teach evolution in science classes in any of the state’s public schools and colleges.

The indictment claimed that Scopes:

“did unlawfully and willfully teach in public schools of Rhea County, Tennessee … certain theory and theories that deny the story of Divine creation of man as taught in the Bible and did teach thereof that man descended from a lower order of animals.”

We’ve assumed certain people wouldn’t vote for Obama just because he’s black but, until today, I hadn’t seen any good polling numbers to support that theory.

The proof comes in the form a new Newsweek poll that employs something called a “Racial Resentment Index” (RRI) that attempts to calculate the racial bias the respondents.

According to the results, approximately 28% of white Democrats had a high RRI score.

Not surprisingly, respondents with high RRI scores (i.e. racists) overwhelmingly preferred Hillary Clinton for the nomination (67% to 21%). Respondents with low RRI scores (i.e. non-racists) preferred Obama (48% to 43%).
