So I get an email from Karen Gasper not long ago. Karen is the Field Director for America Votes Ohio and a friend I first met while becoming more active in politics and later while launching Progress Ohio. She is a super talented person who I grew to really respect in the short time I got to know her.

Apparently Karen is running marathons now and she was contacting friends to help her with a cause. She’s running to benefit Jobila Trust and her focus was on their FGM (female genital mutilation) programs. I found her story of running and getting into shape pretty inspiring – not to mention her work for a worthy cause.

She’ll be running the Cleveland Marathon on Sunday, May 18th. She’s training now and blogging about it at Run Gasper Run! I decided to not only help her with Jobila but to get my ass in gear on something I had twice before started but failed to accomplish. Run a 5k. Small time compared to what Karen is doing, but a big deal for me. I’m 6’1″ and 260 lbs. That’s gotta change. I’m now in week two (day one is today) of a 9 week “Couch to 5k program” and will run a race on June 15th. From there I have no idea what, but that’s my current goal and all that matters.

So I told Karen I’d give her a buck a mile for the Cleveland race. I think a buck a mile for Jobila is a good deal – $26 (technically $26.22). I’d ask both our regular and casual readers to think about doing the same. If not, toss in a tip sized amount to get Karen to her goal of raising $2,000.

Check in on her blog from time to time as well and encourage her along. She’s running distances and times that make me want to faint. I’ll be over there probably reporting on my progress as she’s been my impetus for getting started again and hopefully finishing. She’s even offered to run with me to push me along. How cool is that? Thanks Karen! This is the kind of thing that makes me proud to be a part of the progressive community in Ohio.

Numerous folks have inspired me to run — and keep running. Thanks for the plug for my blog. We’ve raised over $800 so far for Joliba Trust — only $1200 more to go!
