“Blundering US leader” is right:

South Africa has been forced to prove Nelson Mandella is still alive after gaffe-prone George Bush made it sound like the former president had died.

The blundering US leader created the confusion when he said “all the Mandelas are dead” when talking about politicians in Iraq.

But the Nelson Mandela Foundation quickly assured the world that South Africa’s first black president, who was jailed for 27 years during the Apartheid era, was still alive.

Its chief executive Achmat Dangor said: “It’s out there. All we can do is reassure people, especially South […]

Bush continues to be “optimistic” about the economy and in this he is getting very short on company.

In his new book Alan Greenspan skewers “Bush and congressional Republicans for what he said was reckless spending and a politically driven economic agenda.”

And as Greenspan and others predict a recession, Bush continues to claim “the fundamentals of our nation?s economy are strong.”

I guess the obvious question here is: Which fundamentals are those, Mr. President?

Are you talking about our national debt of $9 TRILLION? Or maybe the Mortgage Crisis?

Or how about our currency?

Jumping the Shark

On September 21, 2007 By

I’m not sure how I missed this, but yesterday was the 30th anniversary of perhaps one of the most iconic moments in television history: when The Fonz “Jumped the Shark”. If you’ve never seen the television moment that created the “jumped the shark” meme, here it is.

Perhaps now you understand why this moment symbolizes the point of no return for, well, anything that jumps a shark.

I really wanted to find the clip of Henry Winkler’s character on Arrested Development jumping over a shark (funniest damn thing I ever saw, and it happens so quick if you blink […]

The New Asylums

On September 21, 2007 By

Yesterday I watched part of a PBS documentary called “Frontline: The New Asylums“, which demonstrates that the prison system has become the dumping ground for the mentally ill. 16% of all inmates in Ohio have been diagnosed with a mental illness. It’s really quite remarkable. Ohio, thankfully, does much better than most states in dealing with mentally ill inmates. Lots of footage from Lucasville, and with Columbus PD.

It’ll be on WOSU (digital channel 34.1) again this Sunday at 9AM. Or you can watch the entire program online.

Ahmadinejad and ‘Ground Zero’

On September 21, 2007 By

People incensed that Ahmadinejad wants to visit ‘Ground Zero’ (purportedly to ‘pay his respects’) are being a bunch of ninnies. Personally, I agree with Josh Marshall’s take.

how brittle do we think our national reputation is that it’s going to be damaged by Ahmadinejad going down to Ground Zero and at worst spouting off about whatever he wants to spout off about. To put to succinctly, who cares? Why should we care what he says? If there are any propaganda victories to be had I think the spectacle of our national overreaction has provided him with quite a […]

Your tax dollars hard at work…

On September 21, 2007 By

What a friggin’ waste of time. Senate Republicans (and possibly House Republicans as well, if Mr. Boehner gets his way) would rather waste everyone’s time passing resolutions condemning MoveOn rather than discussing stuff that’s, you know, important.

The US Senate has voted to condemn an advertisement attacking the country’s top commander in Iraq as he gave key testimony on military progress there.

In the House of Representatives, Republican leader John Boehner recommended a similar move.

But a spokesman for House Speaker Nancy Pelosi told The Associated Press news agency that the priorities of Americans lay elsewhere.

“The House is […]
