Apparently the Vietnam War Memorial suffered some vandalism last week. This is, obviously disappointing. I’ve been to the memorial, and it’s powerful. And while our culture is entirely too nationalistic and militaristic, desecration of memorials (to anyone) is really really inappropriate. Thankfully, it appears that there will be no lasting damage, and the U.S. Park Police are investigating in hopes of finding the vandal.
That should be the end of the story, right? Not for the wingnuts. Michelle ‘FDR was right to imprison Japanese-Americans’ Malkin outrage has apparently bubbled over.
Vandalism. Desecration. Cowardice. Coddling.
Enough is enough.
So, despite the fact that in this incident (and many others that Malkin points out) are under police investigation, hopefully ending in criminal charges and penalties for the perps, she thinks the rule of law is not enough? What exactly does she want? Mr. Creedy’s fingermen out there black-bagging people?
To paraphrase a favorite right-wing bumper sticker used to support a war of choice against a country that was not threatening our freedom (or even our lives), “Freedom Isn’t Free.” One of the costs of freedom is that some people do things that you don’t like, and retribution can only occur after the act, if they can be caught, and then within the bounds of the law. In a free society, sometimes vandalism occurs. In a free society, sometimes terrorism occurs. If you want to stamp those acts out, you have to stamp out the freedom that allows those actors room to act.
Isn’t it clear that these wingnuts are, in fact, fascist? For those of you who don’t believe that, how far do they have to go for you to recognize that fact?
More: The Weekly Standard pretty much advocates for fascism!
The fascists are coming! Or rather, they’re already here, installed in the White House, planning like mad to subvert the Constitution and extend their reign in perpetuity, having first suppressed and eviscerated all opposition and put all of their critics in jail. Thus goes the rant of America’s increasingly unhinged left. If only, sigh many Bush partisans, wondering when this administration will get out of the fetal position and show some fighting spirit.
