As you may have probably heard, Karen Hughes has been transitioning back into the public eye lately. I guess she is probably picking up the slack for Karl Rove as he transitions out of the administration and on to bigger and better things.

As one of her first big acts, Karen (AKA The Under Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs) along with Condoleezza Rice, announced today that Cal Ripken, Jr. would be appointed “our newest American public diplomacy envoy”.

There is, however, no news yet as to when he’ll be heading off to Iraq to congratulate the Iraqi soccer team.

Isn’t it interesting how little notice Karen Hughes has gotten in the last few years. When she left the WH they talked about it being as profound as Rove leaving, yet when she came back into government service (apparently, she didn’t need to spend THAT much time with the kids afterall), it barely got any notice.

If I recall, her specific mission in the State Department is to improve the image of the United States in the Middle East.

    Bang up job, Karen!

  • And now she is going to use an AMERICAN BASEBALL player to help her with that mission?

Iraqis don’t play baseball! ( but Iran does )

How about the Brits bringing out David Beckham? He’d have a MUCH better chance of improving the west’s image in Iraq than Cal.
