“I’ve had a hell of a good time,” Vonnegut once wrote. “I tell you, we are here on Earth to fart around, and don’t let anybody tell you any different.” (WaPo)
Another dead hero. Bill Hicks. HST. Vonnegut. Inspiring voices to me they all were. Unapologetic, not always serious, thoughtful, piercing, and mostly right. The irony of having days ago read Kurt’s forward to Ralph Steadman’s “The Joke’s Over” is not lost on me. It’s as if he were waving goodbye in his words about Hunter’s passing.
We lost probably the best critical voice of our time. I imagine Ali will go soon too. Might as well. Leave us all here to our own meager devices. Not much we’ll be left with…unless the kids start stepping up in a big damned way. There is some hope. It seems as long as there is darkness there will always be someone there to describe it darker than you imagined and if not offer hope of light, make you laugh your ass off not to worry so much.
Ciao, baby. See ya next time. Until then we’ll be here farting around. So it goes…
