Hacking Democracy

On November 3, 2006 By

I just finished watching this totally excellent documentary about on HBO called Hacking Democracy, and the trouble with secret computerized vote tabulating.

My first thought – Diebold uses Microsoft Access for vote tabulation? Seriously?

My second thought – the documentary clearly lays out why this should be a bipartisan issue about the accuracy of our election processes, not partisan. Anyone who thinks that elections should remain as secretive and unaccountable as they are now has an agenda.

This is a fabulous documentary, with some actual video evidence of malfeasance. They even demonstrate and document how to steal […]

Tomorrow is the last day to mail an absentee ballot request. Best get on it.

To be honest, if you are requesting an absentee ballot tomorrow, you had best just go down to the BoE and vote in person, rather than hoping everything goes to plan.

From Wired:

Put away the petri dish. Turn off the Bunsen burner. When mid-term election results start to roll in next Tuesday, few groups will be as glued to the television as America’s scientists.

In a country grousing for new leadership, the elections will be a referendum on an unpopular president and a chance for science-friendly candidates to hang out a shingle on Capitol Hill. The change could prompt government action on a range of issues.

In New Mexico’s 1st Congressional District, Republican incumbent Heather Wilson and Democratic challenger Patricia Madrid have made stem cells and green energy […]

Tin foil hat alert!

On November 3, 2006 By

This is a good one. In response to Blackwell touting the endorsement of the Call and Post (Don King’s newspaper!):

I wonder how many blacks have been polled and hid the fact that they support Ken?

Tug those tin-foil hats on a little tighter, RABid! It’s election time!

Without words

I honestly have no idea what to say about this shameless bit of manipulative politics.

I say all of that because the Bush administration, in one of the most shamelessly manipulative acts one can fathom, has ensured that the show trial of Saddam Hussein is scheduled to end with a guilty verdict and likely death sentence on November 5 — two days before the election. They are now openly acknowledging that they think this event should and will influence the outcome of our election.

Can we seriously just get rid of these jackasses? There is literally […]

Last March, the federal government set up a Web site to make public a vast archive of Iraqi documents captured during the war.

The Bush administration did so under pressure from congressional Republicans who said they hoped to “leverage the Internet” to find new evidence of the prewar dangers posed by Saddam Hussein.

But in recent weeks, the site posted documents that weapons experts say present a danger themselves: detailed accounts of Iraq?s secret nuclear research before the 1991 Persian Gulf War. The documents, the experts say, constitute a basic guide to building an atom bomb.

I found this lovely thing in my mailbox today.

The NRCC definitely got their money’s worth on this one.?

“We want something scary- maybe with flaming letters or something…”

Anyway- I just thought I would share the funny picture and also this comment:

Mary Jo Kilroy lives around the corner from me and, while she does have some annoying dogs, I promise you that small muslim suicide-bombing children do not spend time burning american flags at her house.?? And, from what I can tell, neither do tall white dudes dressed in sheets.
