More voting problems

On October 4, 2006 By

This time, at the Franklin County BoE. BlueBexley provides the blow by blow. It appears to have been sorted out in the end, and I can confirm, since I’ve voted absentee at the BoE downtown before, that the workers there are very nice, and very helpful.

But a voter who perhaps doesn’t know who should be on their ballot – which might be most of them – might not even notice there was a problem in the first place.

After this evening’s debate, Ken Blackwell plans to tour southern Ohio with white supremacist Larry Pratt.

The Southern Poverty Law Center has a good biography of Larry

Eight Lanes Out
Larry Pratt, 58

Larry Pratt, a gun rights absolutist whose Gun Owners of America (GOA) has been described as “eight lanes to the right” of the National Rifle Association, may well be the person who brought the concept of citizen militias to the radical right.

In 1990, Pratt wrote a book, Armed People Victorious, based on his study of “citizen defense patrols” used in Guatemala […]

MyProgressOhio

ProgressOhio, the group Eric left Plunderbund to join, has made their excellent community tools available to the public today. I was fortunate enough to have an opportunity to preview these tools recently, and I have to say that ProgressOhio.org is providing a modern equivalent to the kind of community-building that started with Goldwater and ended with the current Republican stranglehold on government.

The liberal blogosphere in Ohio is excellent – one of the best in the nation. But to take the next step, to start building a real movement, we need to start building a strong, integrated community […]

OK, so this would be pathetic normally. Tiberi’s “Sham”ansky ad, which tries to attack Shamansky for owning more than one residence, debuted this past weekend, and I’ve heard from a pal who works on Republican ad campaigns at a national level that the general consensus is the ad is terrible. Which meshes with my take as well.

Now, the Franklin County GOP claims to have filed a complaint with the Franklin County Board of Elections, claiming Shamansky committed “voter fraud”. While that is slimy and baseless (because they can’t attack him on the issues, they have to make stuff […]

Remember the flareup over a picture of Bob Shamansky with a retired military man he happened to bump into at a parade this summer? At the time, Eric pointed out that The Strategy Group for Media had a picture of Tiberi with an active duty soldier on their website.

Asking Bob to remove a photo of an old friend who happens to be a retired general is the chickenhawk coming home to roost. Problem is there is more evidence of Pat Tiberi granstanding for the military vote. Maybe they can now ask The Strategy Group for Media to […]

I recently watched CC Goldwater’s documentary on her grandfather, Sen. Barry Goldwater (R-AZ), titled “Mr. Conservative: Goldwater on Goldwater”. It was a fascinating look into the life and career of the man who ultimately was the birth of the modern conservative movement. It did not talk much about the mechanics of his failed Presidential campaign, or how that campaign eventually ended in the election of Ronald Reagan to the office in 1980, other than to mention the fact that Goldwater – despite being anti-segregation – felt that desegregation was not the province of government, and that Reagan gave speeches promoting […]

DDN endorses Brunner

On October 4, 2006 By

Working thru the mailbag…

Jennifer Brunner?s ?sense of fairness and knowledge of election law ideally suits her for the job,? said the Dayton Daily News in their endorsement of Brunner for Ohio Secretary of State on Monday October 2, 2006.

?Her background has given her a mastery of details of the secretary of state’s office, and she’s sensitive to the importance of ensuring public confidence in the elections system.?

?Democrat Jennifer Brunner is an outstanding candidate for Ohio secretary of state. She has a sense of fairness and a knowledge of election law that ideally suits her for the job.? […]

Tiberi’s “Sham”ansky ad

On October 4, 2006 By

Saw this ad last weekend, and it’s finally up on YouTube. IMO, it’s terrible – and I’m not even sure what the point of the ad is. (HT: BSB)

You can see part of the Shamansky campaign’s response after the jump.
