Tiberi Obeyedfrom the mailbag via Shamansky campaign:

?Why in the world would Pat Tiberi vote to support illegal gambling interests?? asked Shamansky. ?The answer is pretty obvious: his benefactors in the banking and credit card industries asked him to. Instead of standing up for principle, Mr. Tiberi has again taken a dive for the special interests that fund his election campaigns. And while his constituents are drowning in a sea of debt forced upon them by credit card companies, Mr. Tiberi is floating on a raft of banking industry dollars.? Rep. Tiberi has received more than $62,000 this election cycle from the banking industry and credit card Political Action Committees (PACs). These PACs have also donated more than $246,000 to Rep. Tiberi since he was elected to Congress six years ago.

One of only 17. What in the world could cause someone who votes for the GOP causus 95% of the time? Money. Tiberi obeyed. Chalk his 5% stray votes up to money and being told by lobbyists what they wanted. Again, could this be more clear?

Tiberi Votes to Support Illegal Gambling Opposes the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act

Columbus Ohio: Bob Shamansky, Democratic candidate Congress (Ohio 12th), today blasted Rep. Pat Tiberi (R-Genoa Twp) for voting against the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act. The bill, which passed the House on Tuesday on a 317 ? 93 vote, would prevent banks and credit card companies from sending money to offshore gambling websites. It was co-sponsored by Rep. Tom Osborne, (R-NE), who said ?these sites also are run offshore outside of U.S. laws and regulations that protect minors and prevent fraudulent practices. This combination of easy access with a lack of safeguards can be devastating to minors, problem gamblers, and others who can easily run up a tremendous debt without leaving home.?

Tiberi, a member of the House Financial Services Committee, was one of just 17 Republicans who opposed the bill. According to Rep. Osborne, Americans spend some $5.9 billion dollars annually on online gambling. If the bill becomes law, it would stop the banking industry from receiving their percentage of those dollars tax-free.

He is facing Rep. Patrick Tiberi (R-Genoa Twp.) as the Democratic nominee in the 12th Congressional District.

How much has Tiberi banked from racetrack owners? Because they got a generous exemption from this legislation.

The whole bill is bullshit and perfectly illustrates everything that’s wrong with how we are governed in Washington. It’s a great deal for big casino operators like MGM and Harrah’s who want to eliminate competition from overseas thanks to new technology (gee whatever happened to the benefits of open global markets? It’s probably for the same reason that we can’t import drugs from Canada). The fact that they carved out an exemption for racetracks means it wasn’t intended to eliminate the social ills of gambling. They just wanted to give back to one group of donors while not pissing off another.

Not to excuse Tiberi because I’m sure he’s in someone’s pocket, but there are plenty of reasons not to love this bill.
